Ashley Yeong is a Malaysia-based journalist and a fellow of Climate Tracker Asia’s Content Creators Hub. In a cooking video, she took a deep dive into the world of pumpkins. Pumpkins are not only delicious superfoods, but are also climate-resilient crops as they thrive even in heavy rain and flooded areas.

Here’s what she has to say about making the educational video:

Stepping into the TikTok world as a text journalist felt like diving into uncharted waters. I straddle the line between Gen Z savvy and Millennial hesitation—while I understand the power of social videos, the idea of dancing online to trending songs still gives me pause. I’ve dabbled with short videos on my personal accounts, but using TikTok for work? That seemed like a whole different ball game. Why was I so resistant to the idea? Honestly, I’m still not entirely sure.

But after finally completing the video, I couldn’t help but question my earlier hesitations. It wasn’t just about creating content, it was about discovering the joy of sharing climate-related topics in a lively and engaging way. Sure, there were mishaps—burnt ingredients, flubbed lines—but each stumble only fueled my determination to create something meaningful, something I genuinely enjoyed.

This experience forced me to reconsider what advocacy and journalism meant to me. It’s not just about serious discussions and debates, it’s also about forging personal connections, like bonding over a shared love for cooking. I’m incredibly thankful to the mentors and fellow creators who cheered me on. Their unwavering support gave me the courage to overcome my doubts and dive headfirst into the challenge.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about the possibilities coming my way. This journey has sparked my creativity and deepened my connections with others, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
