KOMPAS.TV – The threat of Jakarta sinking is in sight. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government believes that pipanization can reduce the rate of land subsidence in the capital.
Sea levels are rising, caused by climate change. Some parts of Indonesia are threatened to sink. Including the capital city of Jakarta, which is experiencing land subsidence and is expected to sink by 2050.
A study by the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) revealed that the rate of land subsidence in Jakarta varies from 1 to ten centimeters per year.
Even in some places it reaches 20 centimeters per year. This rate is higher than the global average of about two millimeters per year.
The massive exploitation of groundwater is suspected to be the main cause of land subsidence. Jakarta and its coastal areas are in danger of sinking without proper mitigation measures.
In the Sapa Indonesia Malam program on KompasTV on August 22, 2021, the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, denied the study of ITB researchers and believed that pipelines had slowed the rate of land subsidence.
